At a time when we are all paying much closer attention to what goes into our food, the founders of Made-In Cookware are instead paying attention to what goes into our food.
Made-In is a cookware brand that was founded in 2016 by close friends Jake Kalick, whose family has been in kitchen supply for over 100 years, and Chip Malt, who brings extensive e-commerce experience to the team. The company philosophy is simple: Bring professional kitchen utensils with an emphasis on high quality and the greatest possible transparency to the masses. And because the company’s business model is based on direct sales to consumers, this high quality product is available at a much lower price than many other similar products on the market today.
* Editor’s note: We no longer recommend non-stick pans based on PTFE. For more eco-friendly and healthier non-stick options, check out our Clean Cookware Guide. Even so, we recommend Made In’s professional stainless steel and carbon steel options.
An extensive range of products
In addition to high-quality knives from the French knife capital Thiers, Made-In manufactures various cookware series: stainless steel, carbon steel and non-stick coating, which we present in our guide to non-toxic cookware.
The stainless steel line consists of an aluminum core and five-layer stainless steel. From frying pans to saucepans to soup pots, this line is a great workhorse for the kitchen that can be used for all of your daily cooking needs.
Carbon steel is a great, lighter weight alternative to cast iron. Over time, these pans slowly form spices that make working even more pleasant.
“Be patient with it,” advises Malt. “There’s some discoloration that occurs when you take your pan out of the box before it’s fully seasoned and a lot of people freak out halfway through this kind of intermediate step.”
The company sells a carbon steel spice wax to help consumers protect their pans and stand the test of time.
The brand’s non-stick line uses three layers of proprietary Made Slick PTFE coating for a pan that will retain its non-stick texture for years. The American-made coating is applied in Illinois under the supervision of Made-In by a company that had already removed PFOAs from its formulation before the FDA required it to do so in 2015.
“We chose PTFE because it is a much better performing material than ceramic,” says Malt. “Ceramic degrades every use and wash … and quickly. You will love your ceramic pan right away, but you will love it.” I need a new non-stick ceramic pan within a year. “
The company sells its pots and pans in kits, but consumers can also purchase any product a la carte. Malt notes that this is a great way to bring the slightly more expensive cookware to the masses.
“We welcome and encourage people to build their kits over time,” says Malt, noting that the company’s free shipping policy, zero percent APR funding, and lifetime warranty also incentivize these choices.
“We try to encourage people to invest in good things that will last a lifetime.”
For Malt, transparency and authenticity are the tenants that really set Made-In apart. He and Kalick take care to select only the best manufacturers and materials for making their lines of cookware.
“First and foremost, we have to make the best product in the world,” he says. “We manufacture the products in partnership with manufacturers who have cross-generational expertise.”
And that information is available to consumers, with on-site videos showing the people, places, and methodologies behind each product – something that is non-negotiable once the team starts working with a new person.
“It is a prerequisite for us to show the manufacturing process and be transparent about it,” says Malt. “The people who buy the products know that a fifth generation knife maker from Paris, France, from a family that has been doing this for 500 years, literally makes this knife by hand.”
Not only does this reassure a consumer that they are really investing in the very best cookware. For malt, an essential element of this choice is to create an emotional bond between the consumer and the cookware they use at home.
“We really don’t see that on the market today,” says Malt. “Everything is just a commodity. We want people to fall in love with a product.”
For consumers who focus on food quality and transparency, this is a natural next step.
“They focus so much on ingredients,” he says. “And at the end of the day they go home and just cook it in a non-stick frying pan that the hell has been scratched and has been in the closet for 20 years.”
“You must fall in love with your cookware as much as you fall in love with the marbled, grass-fed steak you brought home that day,” he continues.
For malt, that’s exactly what Made-In really is.
“The name Made-In means that the products are made in the best places in the world that this product is made,” he tells Tools at the end of the day. “
